Houseplant Setup in a Small Apartment

In case you didn’t know I have a small obsession with houseplants. This obsession has been rapidly growing and I officially outgrew my small plant stand. So this weekend I decided it was time for an upgrade! Here is how I set my houseplants in a small apartment.

You can also check out all my favorite houseplant products here.

Houseplant shelf

Houseplant Shelf

My shelf is the VITTSJÖ from Ikea and I am in love. The middle shelves are glass which is perfect for my grow lights to shine through. It comes in white or black and is extremely sturdy. I highly recommend it.

Best Humidifier for houseplants

New Humidifier

I also upgraded my humidifier to a Levoit large room cool and warm mist humidifier. This humidifier has so many perks. It has a sensor so it can maintain a specific humidity in the room. The temperature of the warm mist can be changed, the amount of humidity in the room, and the level of mist. It holds over a gallon and half water and the coolest thing is the double nozzles so you can send mist in two different directions.

String of hearts

A humidifier isn’t always a necessity but your plants will thrive so much better with one. Tropical house plants typically live in 60-70% humidity. My house sits at around 35-45% if I am lucky. So if you’re getting brown tips or your plants aren’t growing well you may need to up your humidity.

Growlights

I’ve had grow lights for a while and my plants go crazy for them. I only have north-facing windows in my house and my plants get hardly any light so I had to add grow lights. Mine are simple to grow lights from Homedepot but there are more decorative grow lights available. You can also purchase grow light bulbs and put them in fixtures you already have. The grow lights do need to be in a short distance to your plants so you can’t just change out your ceiling lights but you can easily put them in lamps. I highly recommend growing lights if your home is dark or if you want to put a plant in a dark corner.

propagations box

The other fun thing I bought is a heating mat for my plant propagations. I love propagating plants. It’s incredibly easy and it fuels my hobby. From these propagations, I am able to trade plants/cuttings, sell them, and give them away to friends and family. The heating pad warms the soil or rooting medium and encourages root growth and creates humidity in my prop box. I have already seen a huge difference in my propagation since I got it 2 weeks ago.

I still have some stuff to do to this plant stand like hiding the cables and picking up some more decorative pots but I hope this brought you some inspiration.

Headed to the snow for Christmas 🎄 ❄️⛄️ Headed to the snow for Christmas 🎄 ❄️⛄️
Homeschool by the pool 🌞 We’re working on our Homeschool by the pool 🌞 We’re working on our letter sounds. These foam letters in the pool have been a big hit. We put the letters up on the tile and take turns calling out letters and letter sounds for each other to find. To take it a step up I started calling out words emphasizing the first letter sound and Ryan had to pick out the letter. We’ve had lots of fun. I wish I started this sooner in summer but I think it will be a great bathtub activity when it’s too cold to go outside.
We started our Geology unit study this week and we We started our Geology unit study this week and we’ve been having so much fun already. After reading a couple rock books and looking at this rock and mineral field guide Ryan made some rocks of his own. He especially loves crystals so he had to include those. The next few weeks are going to be a lot of fun and then we will move on to dinosaurs.
